William Jenks will perform outdoors in the Lajos Balogh Performance Shell with internationally renowned guitarists Ruben Gonzalez, Alberto Cumplido, and a special performance with the Marylhurst University Guitar Ensemble. Jenks’ program will include G.F.Handel’s Harp Concerto Op. 4 No. 6, pieces by Manuel de Falla, Maurice Ravel and more.
This concert opens Marylhurst’s Summer on the Green series and closes the 2016-2017 Portland Guitar Series.
Concert is free and open to the public. If you’re not a PCG sponsor or season ticket holder, you will need to bring your own lawn chair. Preferred seating and chairs will be provided for all PCG sponsors and season ticket holders.
Originally from Cuba, guitarist Ruben González Avila received his degree music from the Instituto Superior de Artes de la Habana. He has studied with excellent teachers who include Alina Quezade, Efrain Amador, Aldo Rodriguez and Maestro Leo Brouwer. Mr. Gonzáles-Avila teaches, performs and provides master classes in the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Argentina. He has been winner of several notable guitar competitions.
Growing up in Chile, guitarist Alberto Cumplido studied composition and music theory with Cirilo Vila, musical performance with Luis López and Oscar Ohlsen, and literature with the poet Enrique Lihn. Abroad, he studied classical guitar with Abel Carlevaro, Eduardo Fernandez, Leo Brouwer, Egberto Gismonti, Manuel Barrueco, Ralph Towner, Ichiro Suzuki and Oscar Gighlia, as well as studying jazz in Barcelona. While living in Germany, he collaborated with composers Gustavo Becerra and Olaf Jansen, creating an egaging hybrid of modern classical music and jazz. An adventurous musician, Cumplido has experimented with electronic music, and has composed for dance, film, and theater. He has also explored the intersection of music and the spoken word.
Cumplido has appeared on 5 CDs, as both an interpreter of other people’s music and a composer for different chamber ensembles. Several guitarists from around the world have played his compositions, and he has been commissioned to create new works for the German guitarist Christian Wernicke and the American guitarist Hilary Field. In 2000, his CD Timeless was nominated for an Altazor award. Cumplido is also director and creator of the festival Entrecuerdas. Between 2013 and 2014 he gave concerts and master classes in Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Peru and the USA. He has performed in international competitions in Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, and Colima (in Mexico).
