FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Milwaukie, OR (August 2010). Portland Classic Guitar proprietor William Jenks is proud to
present Acoustic Guitar Summit, a stellar fingerstyle group featuring Grammy-winning guitarists Doug Smith, Mark Hanson, and Terry Robb. This ensemble will be presenting an
eclectic program of blues, jazz, folk, and pop, at 8 PM on Saturday, September 11th, 2010. Their concert will be at the First Congregational Church in downtown Portland.
Acoustic Guitar Summit is what pop fans might call a power trio of the instrument (as the
Dalles Chronicle put it, the group consists of three “guitarists at the top of their form”). The high level of artistry these players create together is not
surprising, given their individual talents. Mark Hanson, for instance, has a long performance history, and his recordings are heard regularly on NPR, and also on syndicated
radio and television programs such as Martha Stewart Living and West Coast Live. Hanson also publishes prolifically in the guitar education field (over 30 books, videos, and
DVDs since 1985), a fact that led to his being referred to as “perhaps the greatest teacher of fingerstyle guitar” by A Prairie Home Companion’s Pat Donohue.
For his part, Hanson’s band mate Terry Robb is one of the premiere blues- and jazz-influenced guitarists on the world. He has worked with folk luminaries like John Fahey
(producing and playing on Fahey’s classic 1983 album, Let Go), local blues legends like Curtis Salgado, and international stars like Buddy Guy and Steve Miller. Robb
also won the Cascade Blues Association’s prestigious “Muddy Award” nineteen times (more than anyone else), and is listed in the organization’s Hall of
Fame.
Rounding out this impressive trio is guitarist Doug Smith, who has been described by Billboard
Magazine as possessing a “stunning fingerpicking” technique. A past winner of the prestigious Winfield International Fingerstyle Competition, Smith is also a
composer, and his original music has been heard on radio and TV stations throughout the world, including CNN, ESPN, E’s True Hollywood Story, The Discovery Channel, The
Martha Stewart Show and The View. In addition, he has recorded music for several soundtracks, including the Hollywood blockbuster Twister. Among the more than a dozen CDs to
his credit, Smith’s contribution to the Henry Mancini tribute CD Pink Guitar recently helped it win the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental CD.
The First Congregational Church is located at 1126 SW Park Avenue, Portland, OR 97205. Reserved
Seating is $49 and general admission for the concert is $35 or $30 for students, seniors and Portland Guitar Society members. More information: portlandclassicguitar.com.
