FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Milwaukie, OR (August 2010). Portland Classic Guitar (PCG) proprietor William Jenks is proud to
present preeminent guitarist John Williams in concert at the Rolling Hills Community Church in Tualatin, on Friday, October 22nd, 2010, at 8 PM. This exceedingly rare
performance—the first time Williams has performed in Portland—is sure to be a highlight of the PCG 2009-2010 Concert Season. Williams is arguably the greatest
living guitarist in the world, and Rolling Hills is a venue that features great acoustics, excellent parking, and comfortable seating for up to 2500 people.
Williams has the distinction of having studied with Andres Segovia, who many would argue is the
father of classical guitar playing, as we now know it. A stunning solo performer (who, among other things, has brought increased attention to the works of the seminal
Paraguayan composer Agustín Barrios), Williams has also collaborated with many of the most esteemed classical musicians of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries,
including Julian Bream, Itzhak Perlman, Andre Previn, John Dankworth, and Daniel Barenboim. Most of his recordings are available through Sony Classical.
Williams is one of those rare classical guitarists who are not only adored by fans of the
genre, but who also have broad crossover appeal. This is at least in part because of his adventurous spirit, and his willingness to explore other areas of music.
Williams’s varied musical activities have included the fusion group SKY, his ensemble John Williams and Friends (known in particular for their recordings of music from
Senegal, Cameroon, Zaire, South Africa, Madagascar and Cape Verde), the ensemble ATTACCA (a septet focusing on contemporary composition), collaborations with The National
Youth Jazz Orchestra, a duo with flamenco guitarist Paco Peña, and various collaborations with composer Richard Harvey. Williams’s recording of Stanley Meyers’s
“Cavatina” was supplied with lyrics by the jazz singer Cleo Laine; after Laine and Williams recorded the resulting song as “He Was Beautiful,” it was
used in the movie The Deer Hunter, and became an international hit.
In short: if you can attend only one PCG event this season, this should be it.
Rolling Hills Community Church is located at 3550 SW Borland Road., Tualatin, OR. Ticket prices
