Milwaukie, OR (March 2010). Portland Classic Guitar
is pleased to announce a concert by David Russell, who will perform a program of solo works (running the gamut from Bach to Albeniz to a piece by a living composer (F. Kleynjans)) on
Tuesday, April 20th, 2010, at the historic First Congregational Church in downtown Portland. This concert, which starts at 8 PM, promises to be a high point in Portland Classic
Guitar’s already outstanding 2009-10 performance series. A master class (held at the Portland Classical Guitar studio) will follow on Wednesday, April 21st at 6 PM.
Russell is arguably one of the best-known classical guitarists in
the world. The New York Times has called him “a talent of extraordinary dimension,” and the Washington Post has lauded him for “a musical imagination that stretch[es] far beyond the limitations of the six strings.” A Grammy-winner (for his Telarc release, Aire Latino),
he is critically acclaimed for a virtuosic mastery of his instrument. But as a charming, comfortable performer, he is also an audience favorite.
Russell’s honors as an international performer are too extensive
to list here completely, but there are some particularly impressive highlights. While a student at London’s Royal Academy of Music, Russell twice won the Julian Bream Guitar Prize. He would
go on to win numerous international competitions as well -- including the Andres Segovia Competition, the Jose Ramirez Competition, and Spain's prestigious Francisco Tarrega Competition. In
1997, Russell was named a Fellow of the Royal Academy; a few years later, he was given the Medal of Honor of the Conservatory of the Balearics. Russell has also received numerous honors
specific to geographical locations that have been associated with his career. Es Migjorn, the town in Minorca where he grew up, named a street after him (“Avinguda David Russell”), and
Nigran, in Spain (where he currently resides), gave him its silver medal. In 2009 he received a tribute from the music conservatory of Vigo, culminating with the opening of a new auditorium
named in his honor.
